Des Moines, Iowa – December 2, 2015 – Every year Products Finishing releases its Top Shops Survey, reviewing and scoring hundreds of liquid and powder coating paint shops in the United States. The results are in, and Borgen Merchandising Systems has been named one of the top 50 paint shops in the nation.
The Top Shops Survey is based on a number of quality factors, including finishing performance, finishing technology, business strategy, and training and human resources. Only the top 20 percent of the powder coating and paint shops who complete the survey are awarded with the Products Finishing Top Shops designation.
What makes Borgen’s shop unique is the rigorous testing and quality standards the shop adheres to. The shop subjects all floral cases to salt spray, humidity chamber, and wear and abrasion tests to formulate a plan based on the testing outcomes and the customer’s needs. For deli cases with indirect food contact, Borgen’s shop abides by all quality and safety standards implemented by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF).
Vince Canova, Finishing Manager, has worked in Borgen’s paint shop for 26 years. Beginning with a small batch setup for liquid coatings and only five team members, Canova has helped expand the operation to include an automated powder coating line with more than 50 team members.
While liquid coatings are easier for smaller parts or touch-up jobs, the powder coating line at Borgen can accommodate parts up to 10 feet long, 7 feet high, and 3 feet wide. Canova said Borgen evolved to a predominately powder coating shop about nine years ago because it is more environmentally friendly and provides a better-quality finish.
“This award and where we’re at and where we’re going couldn’t happen without [Borgen],” Canova said. “They’re willing to invest in the technology to better the product for the end user. They don’t just look at the bottom dollar; they strive to give the customer the best product possible. Not everyone does that.”
Borgen Merchandising Systems designs and builds commercial refrigeration systems for deli and bakery, meat and seafood, wine, and floral departments. Their in-house liquid and powder coatings paint shop finishes around 10,000 parts a month.
